Borrower's Guide

We hope you enjoy your time at the library and find what you're looking for! In order to provide free and equal access to all materials, the Library would like you to be aware of the following policies. Download the Borrower's Guide here.

Opening a Library Account

Anyone may open a free Wichita Public Library account, but non-Kansas residents will have limited borrowing privileges. Library cards are issued and valid at every Library location.


A printed form of identification with a name and current address is necessary to get a card. Photo identification is preferred. Some examples are:

  • Driver’s license
  • Kansas ID card
  • Government-issued ID
  • Passport

Those under the age of 18 need a parent or legal guardian’s signature to get a card. The signing adult will be responsible for all items checked out on the card as well as what is accessed on the Internet. Minors may use the identification of a signing parent or legal guardian for address verification.


E-cards are available for those 18 and older who only wish to access the Internet, computers and electronic resources. A photo ID is required to get an E-card.


You are responsible for any items charged to your account. Keep the Library informed of any changes to your contact information. Do not let others borrow your card and if it is lost or stolen, notify the Library immediately. Replacement cards are available for $2.



To log in to the catalog or to manage your account by telephone, you will be asked for a password. Your default password is the last four digits of your telephone number. To change your password, or if you have forgotten your password, see library staff or visit the Your Library Account Logon page on the Library website.

Checking Out and Returns

Pay attention to the loan periods for each item you borrow. Unpaid fees of over $2 or any item more than 15 days overdue will suspend your borrowing privileges.

Materials may be returned to any Wichita Public Library facility, no matter where they are checked out. Materials drops are available at all Libraries.

Most items may be renewed unless someone else has requested the items. To renew an item, use one of these methods:

  • Via phone at 262-6991
  • At any Library location

    Items may be renewed up to two times. Renewal dates are set from the day you renew and are the same length as the initial loan period.

    The Library Catalog

    Accessible online, the catalog allows you to manage your account, see new items, save searches, make lists and more.

    Requesting Items

    If an item you want is checked out, you may be added to a waiting list for $.25 per item. We can notify you by e-mail, text message or phone. When notified that your items are available, please pick them up before the end of the reserve period. If items are not picked up before their expiration dates, a $1 fee per item will be charged to your account. If you no longer need an item you requested, please cancel it so your account will not be charged and the item will be available to other customers.

    If you will be traveling, you can inactivate a request until your return, saving your spot in the request queue.


    By creating an account association for a friend or family member, you may allow these people to pick up holds from your account. In addition to picking up holds, these people may renew materials and obtain lists of items currently checked out for accounts with which they are associated.

    Can't Find What You Need?

    If you are having trouble locating something, don’t hesitate to ask Library staff for help. We may be able to find what you need at another branch or in another library.

    Staff is also available to help you with technology. The Book-a-Librarian program is available to give you one-on-one help with everything from Microsoft Office to downloading eBooks to setting up a Facebook account. Contact your local branch for more information.

    Digital Resources
    Your library card allows you to access a wide variety of online resources, including Ancestry Library Edition, Wichita Eagle archives and e-book downloads. All digital resources are available at Library locations, and most can be accessed remotely.

    Internet Access
    Free Internet access and Wi-Fi is available with your Library card at all Library locations. Printing is available for a small fee.

    Parental Controls

    A parent or legal guardian has legal responsibility for his or her child’s Library use. Parents who wish to place restrictions on services or collections accessed by a child may do so through completion of a parental restriction form.
