Award Winning Volunteers!
In 2010, more than 290 volunteers contributed a total of 18,873 hours, the equivalent of more than nine full-time employees. That includes 4,558 hours of assistance from 179 teen volunteers.
In all, volunteers contributed $393,502.50 of labor. This makes a huge impact on the quality of service the Library is able to provide!
Adult volunteers and special guests enjoyed lunch courtesy of the Friends of the Wichita Public Library at a special luncheon in April 2011 with special recognition given to Sen. Jean Schodorf, winner of the Kansas Library Association's Library Advocacy award. The Telephone Pioneers, a group of dedicated volunteers with more than 162 combined years of service to the Library, were also commended. Ann and Steve Starch, bookstore volunteers, were nominated for the Friends of Kansas Libraries Individual Friends Award. The Friends' own Melzer Award is given annually to the volunteer with the most hours contributed. In 2010, two volunteers tied for that distinction: genealogy volunteer Willa Mae Heisler and Beth Huffmeier, who volunteers in both the Central Library's Technical Services section and Alford Branch Library.
